Case Study: Bourton Mill

As a busy health and leisure club situated in the heart of Oxford, Bourton Mill needs to concentrate on what it does best – looking after the health of its members. So when it comes to print and design, Bourton Mill use Davenports’ services to produce business cards, flyers, posters and templates.
Testimonial from Bourton Mill
“We have found Davenports very fast, efficient, and professional. The quality of the posters and leaflets we have had has been excellent, together with the very competitive prices. The aftercare service has also been very good. We will continue to use Davenports for all our marketing needs, knowing that we will always receive excellent service.” – Gavin Peck, Bourton Mill Oxford.
Promotional Cards and Poster
Bourton Mill used Davenports to produce cards to advertise the club and a special deal they were running for corporate customers.
Davenports advised the club to use a business card-sized design so that receivers could place the card safely in their wallet along with other business cards they would receive.
To impress potential corporate customers, Davenports printed a run of 1000 cards, which were printed full colour both sides onto 400gsm matt card, then matt laminated both sides.
The client provided Davenports with the company’s logo, and we produced a design that kept with their corporate image.

To complement the cards, Davenports also created a poster to be displayed. The posters were printed full colour one side onto 130gsm gloss art paper.
We also created an easy-to-use PowerPoint template for Bourton Mill to use when creating their own copies of the poster, allowing them to amend the details as necessary and reprint the poster when quality is not an issue.
A0 Promotional Poster
Davenports printed three A0 posters (841mm x 1189mm) from artwork supplied by Bourton Mill. The job included modifying the artwork to make it suitable for printing at this size.
The posters were printed onto 160gsm matt paper and encapsulated in 5 thou film (the difference between lamination and encapsulation is that encapsulation creates a seal around the edges, meaning that dust and other contaminants will not appear inside the poster cover).

We also created a landscape version of the poster at the request of the client:
A5 Flyers
Bourton Mill used Davenports to produce flyers to advertise the club from artwork supplied by the client.
We reworked the artwork, which was supplied in Microsoft Publisher format unsuitable for printing.
The A5 flyers were printed full colour, double sided onto 170gsm matt paper. The total lead time on the job was five days!

Case Study: BMR Logo
September 17, 2008 by Davenports

BMR is a London-based recruitment agency. BMR approached Davenports to create a simple yet memorable logo for their business.
The result was a simple logo containing the initials of the company name. The colour scheme is harmonious with the company’s existing colour and font guidelines.

Progression
As with all graphic work, Davenports offers numerous revisions and opportunities for collaboration during the design process.

Case Study: Anne Measures Logo
September 17, 2008 by Davenports

Anne Measures runs a successful complementary health business. As part of an expansion, Davenports created a logo for the company that reflects its beliefs and ethos.
Anne is highly qualified and trusted by her clients, and she uses her name as a sign of trust, recognition and care. We wanted the logo to be easily recognisable by clients so, rather than using a newly-created company name, we used Anne’s name as the only wording in the logo.
Using a soft font with no capital letters brings a sense of friendliness and warmth to this very personal brand.
As a complementary health business, Davenports consulted with Anne and chose the idea of the Chakra wheel as representing the whole range of complementary therapies. A chakra is a center of activity that receives, assimilates, and expresses life force energy. The word chakra literally translates as wheel or disk and refers to a spinning sphere of bioenergetic activity. The use of this imagery and association creates a powerful logomark.
A simple yet dynamic rounded rectangle was chosen as the symbol for a chakra to differentiate Anne from other businesses using chakras in its imagery. One rectangle is used for each chakra, and they are coloured traditionally in rainbow colours, which also represents the all-encompassing range of complementary therapies.
Highlights and shadows were added to the logo to bring added depth and energy to the final image.

Case Study: The Wynford
September 8, 2008 by Davenports

Davenport Web redesigned the website for this busy Reading-based bar. As staff need to add special offers, events and information frequently, Davenports added a CMS system to the site.
The Wynford Arms website was in desperate need of a redesign. The old site had browser compatability issues, used a design that did not reflect the style of the bar, and had to be updated by hand whenever content needed to be added, updated or deleted – meaning that updates were left to technically-minded members of staff only.
Davenports produced a unique design that reflects the image and ethos of the bar.
Integrating Davenport CMS into the site allows staff members to login to the site and add, remove and update offers, events, gallery images and even staff members.
Davenports manages the site’s hosting and email infrastructure also.

Take Control with Davenport CMS

It used to be that having a website presence was enough to differentiate your company from the bricks-and-mortar stores, and drive business your way. Many of these sites were developed ad-hoc using FrontPage, or with a little assistance from your brother’s auntie’s nephew.
Then came the trend for professionally-designed websites – often at a high cost. These websites would be updated infrequently – with a change of phone number or the occasional new product – mostly because any changes required going back to your web design company and paying… again.
These days, simply having a website is not enough. What differentiates businesses online now is content: content that is fresh, and content that is posted frequently. This particularly matters if you want to keep a loyal base of customers, or have your site rank highly in search engines.
But adding content is expensive or difficult, right?
Normally, yes. But a Davenport CMS installation makes this easy and free!
Davenport CMS is special software that sits on your website and makes it child’s play to add new content or edit existing, out of date information.
Davenport Web will design the look of your website, make it compatible with Davenport CMS and add as much initial content as you need. After that, it’s over to you.
At any time, you can log in and write a new page or post. You can add images, videos, sounds and links to other sites. And all of this is without any extra cost to you.
We’re so happy with Davenport CMS that we use it on our own websites, including this one! To show you how easy it is, here’s an image of me writing this very post:

Case Study: Davenports
September 5, 2008 by Davenports
Filed under CMS, Featured, Featured Web

Davenport Web has just finished redesigning our very own corporate website. Here, we examine why the change was needed, the design decisions behind the change, and the outcome.
We’ll also be talking about a lot of the services that Davenport Web provide, so if you see anything that you’d like to see on your own website, get in touch.
Davenports has always been proud to offer accountancy, web and print & design to our clients in one centralized location. However, the company’s website structure simply didn’t reflect this – www.davenportenterprises.co.uk was for accountancy, www.davenportwebsitedesign.co.uk was for web and www.davenportprintanddesign.co.uk was for print & design.
Having these three websites confused our customers and reduced web traffic going to each of these sites.
We decided to unify under the Davenports name under the www.davenportenterprises.co.uk domain name, which had the highest traffic ranking.
From there, we designed a navigation structure that would emphasise the fact that there are three main services the company provides – making it obvious for visitors that all three are provided, but also that you can mix and match between the three as you choose.
Because there are three companies, we decided to dedicate the homepage to news, split into six features from the three companies – two features each, plus an individual latest news box for each company along with a company-wide special offers box.
News is going to be published frequently, and it would be a nightmare to have to keep the features and news boxes up to date manually, so we decided to use Davenport CMS to manage all the content we’re going to be publishing.
By assigning news into categories – e.g. Accountancy Features, Web Features, etc. – the website takes care of the hard work of working out what to display where, allowing less-technical members of the Davenports team to publish content, and increasing the amount of communication we can have through the website.
After making the decision, we used the company’s brand guidelines to create a look and feel consistent with the company’s image, and then set up hosting and email to support the site.
The result is what you see here. Please do leave a comment to let us know what you think of the new site!
